SafeRides is a Georgetown University Police Department service that provides rides for students on and off campus between the hours of 8 and 12 on Sunday through Friday and 8 and 3 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. You can now track the SafeRides van by downloading the Georgetown Mobile App and use the NextGUTS function.
SafeRides helps ensure that students who feel unsafe at night can be transported to their destination. SafeRides is driven by a combination of Student Volunteers as well as GUPD officers.
- Generally, police officers will not be driving the SafeRides vehicles. So, if you are in danger call the Department of Public Safety directly for emergency assistance and an immediate officer response (202-687-4357).
- Neighborhood Shuttles and GUTS are also available to help meet your general transportation needs.
- Ride requests with SafeRides can be fulfilled within 20-25 minutes. To help accomplish this goal, SafeRides has set forth a policy for riders and drivers.
- If you have mobility limitations due to a temporary injury these transportation services may or may not be effective for you. You can read more about the University’s policy here: Information for Students with Temporary Injuries
Call 202-784-RIDE to request a ride or to check on the operating status of SafeRides and Neighborhood Shuttles.
SafeRides provides transportation to and from campus and adjacent neighborhoods within defined boundaries. The boundaries for SafeRides service can be traced as follows from the corner of M St. & Wisconsin Ave, NW: M St. toward Canal Rd. NW, Canal Rd. NW along Foxhall briefly and then MacArthur Blvd all the way to W St. NW. The northern boundary is interrupted by the Glover Archbold Park and then extends north (including 39th St., 38th St., W St., Benton St., Beecher St. - Glover Park) to Calvert St. NW until the eastern boundary of Wisconsin Ave. NW, running south back to M St. NW.
When SafeRides is not in service, you may call 202-784-RIDE to request an individual escort from DPS. The method of escort (walking, patrol car, SafeRides van) will be determined by DPS, based on the resources available at the time of your call. We encourage you to request an individual escort outside of SafeRides operating hours if you anticipate feeling unsafe walking. However, if your personal safety is at risk or you are facing an imminent threat, call the Department of Public Safety at 202-687-HELP. That’s 202-687-4357 or 7-4357 from a university landline.
You may also use the EmergenSee button available on Georgetown Mobile. Once the app is set up (for more information see here) it can be used to send your GPS location to the Department of Public Safety in the event of an emergency. The GPS radius that the Department of Public Safety responds to includes Calvert Street to the north, Wisconsin avenue to the east, Canal Road and M Street to the south, and Foxhall Road to the west. It can also be used to contact 911 in areas outside of this radius. It is recommended that all students download and set up the app, as it decreases response time.
